March 1st, 2016 was National Peanut Butter Lovers’ Day but in this house it could be every day because we’re nuts for peanut butter! Apparently we are not alone because Americans spend almost 800 million dollars a year on peanut butter. Aside from being delicious there are actually some pretty good reasons to love it. Peanut butter is high in protein and is a good source of potassium. It also.contains fiber, healthy fats, magnesium, Vitamin E,Vitamin B 6 and antioxidants.Research shows that eating peanuts or peanut butter can decrease your risk of heart disease, reduces bad cholesterol , protects healthy brain function and may even help protect against certain types of cancer. Now you can see why it’s something to celebrate!
After giving it the careful consideration it deserves I decided that the best place to celebrate this pseudo holiday would be Something Sweet Dessert Cafe. I have it on good authority that they were going to feature a special peanut butter dessert this weekend in addition to their usual fare. This place has become somewhat of an addiction for us on Friday nights. We look forward to going there to enjoy a cup of cappuccino, a latte or one of their many other specialty coffees and indulge in one of their decadent desserts fresh baked on premises by chef/owner Anna Madden. The featured dessert for National Peanut Butter Lovers’ Day( and available throughout the weekend) was a moist chocolate cake topped with an incredibly delicious peanut butter mousse beautifully presented on a platter with bananas brûlée.It was amazing and quite honestly all of their desserts are. The hardest part of going there is trying to decide what to order, you’ll want it all!
With a name like Something Sweet Dessert Cafe you might assume that this is just a coffee house or a spot for dessert but this quaint cafe is so much more than that! They feature an eclectic menu offering homemade soups, salads, sandwiches and meals. They also offer a good selection of beer or wine to go with your dinner. With a cozy and relaxing atmosphere this place is a great spot to unwind and enjoy a delicious meal. They completed an all glass addition this year which overlooks a charming tree lit courtyard.
I had the opportunity while I was there to chat with the owners, Anna and Dave Madden. Anna graduated from the New York Restaurant School and then worked for various caterers and bakers in NYC and the Hudson Valley. On March 27, 2004 she and her husband opened Something Sweet Dessert Cafe located on 17 N Street in downtown Middletown, NY. I asked Anna if she had noticed a change in food trends over the past 12 years that they have been in business and she said that she had. There are more people looking for gluten free and vegan options according to Anna. Part of the charm of this cafe is that they cater to all of their customers’ preferences. Whether you are looking for vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, healthy, gourmet or just a delicious home cooked meal, you’ll find it here. In a city full of fast food and impersonal chain restaurants it’s nice to come to a locally owned cafe that gives back to the community on a regular basis. Whether you’re in the mood for something sweet or a great meal, you’ll find it here!
